Millions of Gmail users at risk from AI-powered scam alert – how to keep yourself safe

A new, highly sophisticated phishing scam is targeting Gmail users, using AI to craft realistic emails and calls that trick victims into handing over their account credentials.

The process is scarily simple. Cybercriminals place a phone call, posing as Google representatives and warning of suspicious activity. They then follow up with an email that looks like an official Gmail security alert, urging the user to share their recovery code.

If victims comply, hackers gain full access to their accounts – potentially leading to identity theft, financial loss, and further breaches. Microsoft consultant Sam Mitrovic, who almost fell for the scam, warned: “These attacks are getting increasingly sophisticated, and many people are likely to be deceived.”

Global cybersecurity experts have stressed the need for extra vigilance. Here are some tips to keep you and your business safe:

  • Avoid clicking suspicious links. Always double check the sender email address to ensure it’s coming from a legitimate and expected source.
  • Never share recovery codes.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect your accounts.
